Friends, supporters, and those seeking assistance: I'll get right to the point. Today I'm suspending operations for Madison Adaptive Cycling.
This was not an easy decision, but a necessary one. Alongside my full-time career, my family is entering a season of transitions. I need to give them my full attention. When you have loved ones with disabilities, sometimes everything is fine and sometimes more help is necessary. And sometimes it happens all at once. I don't mean to be cryptic. I prefer to keep the details private, but please know it’s not a life-or-death situation. It's not a desperate time. Rather, my presence is needed more than it has been and the evenings and weekends that were once open to take care of a nonprofit aren't open anymore.
This past year there have been some incredible moments. I cherish those days when parents and kids' eyes were opened to what kind of cycling is possible. I’m grateful for all the donated cycles I’ve been able to re-distribute to those in need– from Waunakee to Evansville, the far west side to the university campus. Unfortunately I have not been as responsive as I should’ve been when contacted for help or with questions. And so to those of you who’ve not received a response from me, my deepest apologies.
Please know this is not the end of the story. I’m not closing doors, simply hitting the pause button. Taking this step to focus on my family for a few months will also clear some space to reflect and re-strategize, re-connect with some partner organizations over the winter months. My goal is to return in the spring of 2027 with a fresh approach, renewed energy, and a clearer vision for the next chapter.
Thank you for your understanding, your empathy, and your ongoing support. Family must come first and I am deeply grateful to have a community that understands the importance of care, balance, and community.
If you are looking for more immediate assistance with an adaptive cycling need, these are three places I highly recommend. I know the owners personally and they will go above and beyond to serve you. They are:
Tim Staton, The Cargo Bike Shop, Madison, WI and St. Paul, MN, https://www.thecargobikeshop.com/
Brent Emery, Emerys Cycling, Milwaukee, WI, https://www.emerys.com/
Hal Honeyman, The Bike Rack / Creative Mobility, St. Charles, IL, https://www.thebikerack.com/
Until we see each other again, take care of yourselves and each other.
With gratitude,
Brian McNurlen
